More on Colby Touchine

Colby Touchine portrait

When Colby Touchine was still a pre-schooler, there was something about the atmosphere in a Christian church that attracted him. He begged his mother, Gloria Dennison, to take him to church and that led to her becoming a follower of Jesus. Within a few years, God brought Colby and Gloria to the Christian community at Rehoboth, where they became members at the Rehoboth CRC and Colby began his education at Rehoboth Christian School.

Colby’s Christian community now includes people throughout the United States. For three summers he participated in the Continental Singers, a Christian performing group that gives concerts in mega churches and on street corners. He enjoyed staying with and getting to know host families across the country. And he enjoyed looking into audiences and seeing that people were being touched by the message presented in music, drama and dance.

Colby’s interest in the performing arts has been growing through his experience at Rehoboth Christian School. Now at the end of his sophomore year at the High School, his passion is dance performance. He sees himself using dance in ministry, perhaps in teaching. Eventually, he’d like to open his own dance studio. He takes and gives dance lessons. Colby is a member of the Rehoboth Choir, also participating in Cantabile, an advanced group, which has additional practices and performances. Through that, he’s been able to participate in the New Mexico All-State High School Choir.

Colby’s interests extend beyond the performing arts to sports as well. He’s participated in cross country, soccer and basketball. And he’s doing well academically. He plans to attend a Christian college when he graduates from high school.

As he grows in his Christian walk and develops his talents for God’s service, Colby’s motto comes from Proverbs 15:33: The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility come before honor (NIV).

Previous Feature: Judy Peters, Reaching Out to Kids

When Judy Peters moved back home to Sanostee a few years ago, she found that the little mission church in which she had grown up no longer had a Sunday School. Since growing up in Sunday School had been very important to Judy, she asked if she could start it up again. So now, every Sunday, during the sermon time, five to seven children, ranging from 2nd to 6th grade meet with Judy. Judy begins their Sunday School time with prayer. The children are learning to bring their needs and the needs of the families to God. And they also have a Bible lesson, with children reading the stories directly from the Bible.

My name is Randy Freeland. I live in Standing Rock, NM and am part Laguna and part Navajo. The Red Mesa Foundation is helping me to be a pastor to my people, by providing me with a Classis Red Mesa TEAMS scholarship that lets me take classes at Calvin Seminary online. It’s vital for me to remain as a presence in my community as I continue my education. The Foundation is also helping to make connections among Native American Christians and others, so that we can support and pray for each other.

Bricks for Toyee Chapel

Navajo Christians in Toyee New Mexico are raising funds — one bake sale at a time — to build a chapel in which they can welcome their community. They’ve already raised $8,000 and hope to have at least $10,000 early in 2008.

Contribute today. Your gift of $25, $50, $100 will encourage these faithful Christians and help them reach their dream of laying their foundation this summer!
